Summary Digital library:

  • the www library structure shall be finalised into a provisional format
  • The following codes are scheduled for upload until Smolenice:
    • FD3D (LMU)
    • Rotated taggered grid (LMU)
    • Spherical Axisymmetric (LMU, ASU)
    • Spherical Section (LMU)
    • SismoVi (Trieste)
    • GEMINI (Bochum)
    • Normal mode (IPG)
    • Reflectivity (RSES)
  • And other training codes
  • Further subsection „benchmarks“ shall be created for the benchmarking exercises wave propagation (CUB), dynamic rupture, (CUB) and imaging of source (IPG/ETH) and global wave propagation (UU)
  • CUB is preparing a detailed list of benchmarks for completion within SPICE until Bratislava
  • Marco Stupazzini cooperates with Sanches-Sezma to obtain analytical solutions for library
  • Attempts should be undertaken to on all levels to link with GRID projects to make a point for Earth science applications
  • In the future communication within the TG shall be carried out using the mailing list
  • All presentations should go on the www

Summary Numerical methods:

The following topics will be worked upon specifically within the SPICE project

  • Wave propagation on unstructured (triangular, tetrahedral) grids using spectral elements (IPG) or discontinuous Galerkin methods )Trento, LMU). Both group will work together on joint benchmarks specifially adressing triangular/tetrahedral grids. Specific tasks/problems are:
    • Finding optimal point sets/basis functions for SEM approach
    • Benchmarking the performance of DG vs. SEM
    • Applications in basin modelling/global seismology
  • Multidomain Chebyshev methods and applications in cartesian and spherical geometry (Trieste, LMU)
  • Implementation, verification of viscoplastic rheology into SEM modelling approaches.
    • Different visco-plastic Models
    • Combination with frictional boundaries (dynamic rupture)
    • Applications on basin modelling, rupture, strong ground motions
  • Hybrid FE/FD methods (CUB)
  • The developments shall be acommpanied by a carefully chosen set of benchmarks with analytical solutions and numerical solutions from different methods. All results will be published on the www. CUB is leading the benchmarking effort in the domain of wave propagation and dynamic rupture.

Summary Grid generation:

  • Monitor and investigate commercial and open-source algorithms for 2D and 3D mesh generation
  • Recommendations on current grid generators
    • GAMBIT
    • ICEM
    • CUBIT
    • Other?
  • Should the SPICE network fund/support commercial licenses? In the discussion the direction of open-source approaches was emphasised. If somehow possible the open-source code library should work with open-source grid generators.
  • Attempts should be made to get institutions that work on grid generation to participate in SPICE activities.
