PhD Position in computational seismology, Munich
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (Geophysics Section,
Seismology Group) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich,
Germany, is seeking applications from enthusiastic young researchers for
a Ph.D. position in computational seismology. The project is funded
within the “Munich Centre of Advanced Computing (MAC)”. One of the MAC
subgroups with 4 PhD positions in statistics, visualization, mathematics
and geophysics focuses on the problem of parameter estimation with
specific application to the seismic inverse problem. The successful
applicant will build on recent progress in simulation and inversion of
complete waveforms in 3-D media. The goal is to efficiently use
information in the seismic waveforms to sharpen tomographic images of
the Earth’s interior and in particular quantify the associated
uncertainties. The Department has a powerful Linux-cluster and access to
local supercomputer facilities (www.lrz-muenchen.de). More information
can be found at www.geophysik.uni-muenchen.de. Deadline for applications is
December 31, 2008.
Requirements:
- graduated in geoscience, physics, maths or related subject
- experience in programming, preferably also with MPI
- basic knowledge of seismology or wave propagation phenomena
- excellent written and spoken English
- motivation to work in an international and interdisciplinary team
Please send your complete application with CV, a statement of research interests (one page), names of two references, preferably in PDF format to:
