PhD position in Seismology at Granada University

PhD position in Seismology

The Instituto Andaluz de Geofísica at Granada University has been allocated a 4-year PhD grant within a project on earthquake source characterisation in the Iberia-Maghreb region. The proposal originated from an important recent densification of the seismic broadband network, at present comprising ~150 stations in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. The unprecedented station density overcomes the notorious sparse point sampling of seismic wavefields and allows following regional wave propagation almost directly, reminiscent of the complete wavefields computed through numerical methods.

The spirit of this project is to bridge the gap between traditional observational and computational seismology, applying numerical tools for wave propagation in complex media to the modelling and inversion of real earthquake signals. The PhD candidate assigned to the project will be involved in developing a regional 3D Earth model and reprocessing of the Iberia-Maghreb regional moment tensor catalogue accounting for 3D propagation effects through the use of reciprocal Greens function from numerical simulations.

We’re looking for an ambitious candidate, graduated -or about to be graduated- in geophysics, physics or a related subject, willing to develop into an independent researcher with the support of a committed team, and willing to work with large amounts of data and parallel computing. A reasonable background in seismology and a higher programming language is expected, as well as a reasonably high final grade, the latter being necessary to satisfy the requirements of the external grand advisory panel. Salary will be about 1200 Euro/ month. Grant application, in the Spanish FPI program, is expected to be open in March-April 2009. Independently, we can provide an interim contract while waiting for the grant assignment, and work could start in January/ February 2009. The successful applicant can obtain additional funding for a number of short stays (1-6 months) at other research institutions, benefiting from our existing ties or establishing new collaborations. The project should result in a PhD degree in physics from Granada University.

If you’re interested, please send the usual stuff (curriculum, a statement why you’re interested in this project –admitted languages are Spanish, English, German, Italian- and name and address of a potential reference) to:
